How to play

A duel. You hold five cards from your deck. Each round, you and your opponent pick a card at the same time, and both are revealed together. You have 20 seconds to pick.

  • Elements decide first. Fire beats Ice, Ice beats Water, Water beats Fire.
  • Numbers decide when the elements match. The higher number wins (pet abilities and scrolls count toward it, and a Reversal makes the lower one win). Equal totals are a tie: nobody banks, and both cards are gone.
  • The winner banks their card. Then both of you draw back up to five.

Winning. Bank three cards that make a set, all of different suits (spades, hearts, diamonds and clubs):

  • three cards of one element, or
  • one card of each element.

During a duel the game tells you which card would complete your set. A player with no card left to play loses; if both run out together, the bigger bank wins, and equal banks are a draw.

The road. Each land of Montaro has three locals and a Master. Duel the locals along the road, reach the level the Master asks for, then play the Master’s series, best of three. A loss costs nothing but the scrolls you used, so try again as often as you like.

Your deck and your level. You start with 15 cards. Beat a local and you get one of their cards you don’t have yet; beat a Master and one of their cards that won a round against you can be yours. Wins give points, and coins while that opponent still has a card for you, and every level brings coins, and a new card while one is left. The harbour shop sells scrolls for coins: use one a round on the road (not online).

Your pet. You choose your first pet at the start, and every Master you beat gives you theirs. Each pet has an ability: losing rounds fills its bond, and when it’s full you can use the ability once a match. To choose which pet travels with you, open your journal, tap a pet, then Take with me.

Online. Quick matches against whoever is waiting nearest your level, and tables with friends (share the table’s code or the invite link), in Fire-Water-Ice or Twenty-One. Online, you play with every card you own and without scrolls, and nothing you win or lose changes your journey.

Twenty-One. On your turn, play a card onto your line, or stand. Over 21 is a bust and loses the set; six cards at 21 or under win it outright; when both players have stood, the total closer to 21 wins. You also have two side cards for the whole match, each adding or taking away 1 to 4: use at most one a turn. The first to win three sets wins the match.

Your journey, your account and your phone

Your journey is saved on your phone and on our server. The game makes an anonymous account the first time it reaches the server; there’s nothing to sign up for. To see how your journey is kept, open your journal, tap the gear, then Your account.

Playing offline. The journey works without a connection. Your progress goes online by itself the next time the game reaches the server. Online matches need a connection.

Reinstalling the game. On an iPhone, your account key stays in the Keychain when you delete the game, so after reinstalling, the game offers to carry on with your journey. On Android, deleting the game deletes the key: get your journey code first (Your account → Get my journey code), and after reinstalling choose Played before? Find your journey and type it.

Moving to a new phone. On your old phone, open your journal, tap the gear, then Your account. There you can keep your journey with your Apple Account (Sign in with Apple, on iPhone only), or tap Get my journey code and write down the code it shows. On the new phone, iPhone or Android, choose Played before? Find your journey on the title screen. On iPhone, then choose Sign in with Apple or Enter a journey code; on Android, where there’s no Sign in with Apple, it goes straight to the journey code. Type the code and tap Find my journey. On Android, the journey code is also how you find your journey after reinstalling the game. Keep the code to yourself: anyone who has it can carry on your journey. If you lose it, make a new one from Your account on a phone that plays your journey; the old one stops working. Without Sign in with Apple or a journey code, a journey can’t be moved to another phone. Taking a journey found on another account deletes the account this phone was on, unless it has an Apple Account or a journey code of its own.

“Another journey is saved.” If you start a new journey on a phone that already has one saved online, the game asks which to keep. Choose carefully: the journey you don’t keep is replaced.

“The game server is updating.” We’re installing an update. Wait a minute and try again.

“Can’t reach the game server.” Check your connection. If it keeps happening, write to us.

Names and reports

Your name. Other players see your name at online tables. To change it, open your journal, tap the gear, then Your account, and tap the button next to your name. Names with offensive words aren’t allowed.

Reporting a name. After a quick match, tap Report …’s name at the end of the match. You won’t be matched with that player again. When several players report a name, everyone else sees “Nameless” instead until its owner chooses another. For anything else, write to us.

Montaro, the purchase

What it is. Rook’s Harbour, Mara’s Riverboat, online play and Twenty-One are free. Montaro is a one-time purchase that opens Lirien’s Wood now, and Nerissa’s Reef, Halvar’s Fjord, Voss’s Expedition and Brenna’s Canyon as later updates bring them, with no further cost. Without it you can still see the wood’s road; its first duel shows the offer. You can also open it from your journal: tap Montaro, under the seals, to buy it before the road gets there.

Restore purchases. On a new phone, after deleting your account, or if the game doesn’t show Montaro as yours, open the offer (journal → gear → Montaro) and tap Restore purchases. It asks the App Store or Google Play what your Apple Account or Google Account has bought and moves those purchases to the game account on this phone. A purchase can only be restored on the store that sold it.

“Waiting for approval.” With Ask to Buy (iPhone), or a purchase that needs a parent’s or your bank’s approval (Android), the purchase waits until it’s approved. The wood opens as soon as it is.

Refunds. The store handles payments and refunds. On iPhone, request one at reportaproblem.apple.com; on Android, through Google Play (play.google.com, Order history) within 48 hours of the purchase, or write to us after that. Progress you’ve already made in the wood stays; going further needs Montaro again.

Deleting your account and data

You can delete your account inside the game:

  1. Open your journal, tap the gear, then Your account.
  2. Tap Delete account, then Delete for good.

This deletes your account and your journey on our server straight away, removes your account key from the phone, and starts the game again from the beginning. If you used Sign in with Apple, it also cancels the game’s access to your Apple Account. Your phone must be online; if it isn’t, the game says so and nothing is deleted.

You can also stop using Sign in with Apple with Card Legends: Threefold in your iPhone’s Settings, under your Apple Account (Sign-In & Security, then Sign in with Apple), or at account.apple.com. We then remove your Apple Account from your game account; your journey stays until you delete it. If you delete your Apple Account, your game account is deleted too.

If you no longer have your phone. If you kept your journey with your Apple Account, install the game on any iPhone, find your journey with Apple, and delete the account from there. If you have your journey code, install the game on any iPhone or Android phone, find your journey with the code (Played before? Find your journey on the title screen), and delete the account from there. If you have neither, write to [email protected].

[CHECK: gap, not for publishing.] The server has an in-app delete (DELETE /accounts/me in apps/server/src/http.ts, called from apps/mobile/src/app/account.tsx), so Apple’s in-app deletion requirement is met, and an Apple ID or a journey code (POST /accounts/recover) lets a player reach their account from another phone to delete it. What’s missing is a way to delete an account for someone who has lost its phone and has neither an Apple ID on it nor its journey code: the account ID is never shown to the player, player names aren’t unique, and there’s no admin tool to delete an account by hand. Such an account also stays forever, since nothing removes unused accounts. On Android this happens on every reinstall without a journey code, so it will be the usual case there. Options: show the account ID on the Your account page so a player can quote it, add a small admin script (like src/backup.ts) that deletes an account by ID, and remove accounts unused for a long time. Until then, the honest answer to such an email is that we can’t identify the account.
